DIY Basket Pendants

I’m not sure I’ve ever been more excited for a simple DIY project as I was with these basket pendants. They turned out better than I could have ever imagined, and saved us a ton of money!

Here’s the little back story if you didn’t see it on IG (https://www.instagram.com/livingsimplybydesign/). I wanted to change out our kitchen pendants to basket style. We didn’t redo any of the lighting with our kitchen remodel- so we worked with what we had with two drop down pendants. The ceilings are really high in the kitchen, so the small glass pendants just weren’t doing the trick. (Insert want for basket pendants here). I wanted the basket style because I knew they would make more of a statement and ultimately be larger than the small glass ones that we had.

I originally found some basket pendants that I wanted from IKEA, but when I went to place the order, I wasn’t able to get them shipped to our zip code and they were sold out at our local store. This left me in the dilemma of purchasing outrageously expensive basket pendants from another retailer, or making my own. I searched high and low for baskets that had a lot of holes in them. I wanted the open holes in the baskets so that they would give off the most light. I don’t know how this happened, but I found the PERFECT baskets at HomeGoods on a whim.

To make the pendants, we cut the basket handles off with steel wire cutters, and flipped the baskets onto their base. We used the original wire from our old pendants and just took off the glass piece and replaced it with the basket. That’s really all there was to it! Seriously the most simple change, under $35 total, and HUGE impact!! I’m so excited!

For the record, had we not already had pendants hanging, and if we were unable to take off the glass piece, I likely would have just bought full basket pendants. However, we already had everything set in place and just needed to change out one piece of the whole pendant.

If you decide to change out your pendants to baskets, tag me on Instagram! I would love to see which style basket you choose!
